RYA Safety Boat Course
17th - 18 July 2021
The course will cover:
- Safety equipment
- More advanced powerboat handling
- Towing (other powerboats, a dinghy, multiple dinghies, alongside and astern)
- Capsize recovery (multiple techniques), including recovering an inverted dinghy
- Lee shore rescue
- Man overboard
- Winsdsurfer and kayak rescue
- Recovering a casualty from the water
- Safety boat management
- Consideration of other types of rescue (kite surfers, multi hulls)
All of these exercises will put capsized dinghies (with the mess that is their rigging and sheets) and people in close proximity with the RIBs and their engines. The course requires the students to be a competent Level 2 helm so they can focus on the rescue rather than struggling to position the RIB in the right place. The course is somewhat physically demanding and the students will most likely get wet and muddy. Before signing up for the course please have an honest reflection on your skills and decide whether you're proficient enough.
The instructors (who will double as the incompetent sailors in need of rescue) will be Nick Jones, Jen Tankard and Martin Sweet.
