RYA Dinghy Level 1 - Start Sailing

The RYA Dinghy Level 1 Start Sailing Course is an introduction to sailing dinghies for complete beginners, covering everything you need to know to get afloat under supervision. Further course details are on the RYA website here.

During the two days you will cover:

• Rigging a dinghy
• Some knots
• Rules of the road
• Intro to meteorology
• Launching, leaving the shore, and getting back again
• Sailing the dinghy upwind and downwind
• Controlling your speed and stopping
• Turning the dinghy (tacking and gybing)
• Capsize recovery

There will be the option to learn in either single handed dinghies (Fusions) or double handed dinghies (Laser 2000). The number of places available will depend on the number of instructors.

This course would normally be followed by Level 2, and some centres run them as a single combined course over 4 days. The members who sign up for this course will get first refusal for the Level 2 course planned for the following weekend.

The course is 16 hours of instruction (mostly practical with some theory) so takes two full days. The RYA does not specify a minimum age but recommends that students under 16 consider the youth scheme instead. This course is therefore aimed at our TISC adult members.
